Alexandria was founded by
Alexander the Great in 331 B.C. remained the capital of Egypt for nearly a
thousand years, until the Muslim came to Egypt in AD 641 when Cairo was
founded. Alexandria better known as the mermaid of the Mediterranean
is the second largest city in Egypt, has an atmosphere and special ambiance
that’s more Mediterranean rather than eastern, although it’s only 225 km from
Cairo. Alexandria was known
because of its lighthouse, one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the world, used to be the center of learning in the
ancient world due to its Library (the largest library in the ancient world);
and the Catacombs of Kom El Shogafa one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle
Ages.
From the late 19th
century, it became a major centre of the international shipping industry and
one of the most important trading centers in the world, Although the number of
historical sites are very limited in Alexandria but it is still considered one
of the most attractive cities in Egypt for its nice weather, long beaches, and
friendly people.
